DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\nStrange Umbrellas are unique events of experimental
  music\, free improvisation\, film and art in London and elsewhere.\n\nIt 
 was founded in 2013 by artist &amp\; curator Blanca Regina and free improv
 iser &amp\; composer Steve Beresford. Later they were joined by experiment
 al musician &amp\; musicologist Jack Goldstein and film curator &amp\; vis

 ing the late naughties Crystabel Riley toured Japan and Europe using drums
 \, electronics and make-up in noise trio Maria and the Mirrors. This was t
 he start of her interest in patterns on skins - human and drum.\n\nShe was
  later encouraged - and welcomed - into the Horse Improvised Music Club by
  Daniel Thompson and Sue Lynch respectively. This instantly consolidated i
 nto weekly playing with Sue\, who she still collaborates with.\n\nShe is c
 urrently working on the multi-format duo project @xcrswx with Seymour Wrig
 ht. This contrasts the LIVE (evolved sounds / patience / relentless) and t
 he ANDROID (cropped media [sounds+visuals] / impatience / InstantPublicati

 calist\, songwriter and actor\, has an important place in music history by
  introducing Jazz to the traditional genre of the Ghazal (Urdu ballad)\, t
 hereby creating the new musical genre of World Music.\n\nHaving been at th
 e forefront of the World Music scene for two decades\, Najma has proved to
  be a successful and versatile artist\, renowned for using modern jazz inf
 luences with Indian vocals\, creating a beautiful fusion of eastern and we
 stern styles\, pushing the sound barriers by introducing Blues\, Rock and 
 other eclectic influences to new and undiscovered frontiers.\n\nThis iconi
 c pioneer’s presence on the World Music scene had led to a new wave of i
 nspired Asian artists of Indian descent following in her footsteps.\n\nShe
  has released eight critically acclaimed solo albums and has collaborated 
 with many world-class artists\, as diverse as Jah Wobble\, Jimmy Page and 
 Robert Plant\, Andy Summers (The Police)\, Basement Jaxx\, Jethro Tull\, P
 hilip Glass and Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart). She was in several musical
  and creative theatre projects: ‘Bollywood Dreams’ with Andrew Lloyd W
 ebber\, Tara Arts and the National Theatre. Najma is set to release her ne
 w album\, ‘Five Rivers’.\n\n\n\n\n\nMICHAEL MAZIERE\nDr MICHAEL MAZIER
 E is an artist and curator who studied Creative Photography at Nottingham 
 Trent Polytechnic and Film and Television at the Royal College of Art. His
  practice encompasses the production of artworks\, the curation of exhibit
 ions\, lecturing and writing about artists' film and video. Maziere is cur
 rently a Reader in Film and Video and before joining the University\, he w
 as a Research Fellow at the British Artists' Film and Video Study Collecti
 on at the University of the Arts\, London.\n\n\n\nLAURA TRAGER\nLAURA TRAG
 ER (*1987) holds a Bachelor of Arts in Media-Culture from Bauhaus-Universi
 ty in Weimar\, Germany\, and a Master of Arts in Media Studies from The Ne
 w School\, NYC. With a background in media and cultural theory Laura's art
 istic and academic interest is film philosophy. After moving to NYC in Sum
 mer 2011\, she started working in 16mm and Super 8mm film\, as well as in 
 digital video\, still photography and sound. Since 2015\, Laura is based i
 n Hamburg\, Germany.\n\n\n\nPIERRE BOUVIER PATRON\nPIERRE BOUVIER PATRON i
 s a visual artist based in London. He is currently working with different 
 media\, such as digital video and film\, exploring the boundaries between 
 them and creating moving image works\, performances and installations. He 
 has developed many practices and skills in various areas such as experimen
 tal film\, documentary films\, music videos\, etc. He studied cinema at th
 e Université Lyon II Lumiere of Lyon.\n\nHe has been involved in video sc
 reenings and video performances\, in solo or in collaboration with musicia
 ns such as Syd Kemp\, Neil’s Children\, artist Blanca Regina\, and many 
 others. His work has been shown in France\, Spain\, the United Kingdom\, G
 ermany\, etc.\n\nHis latest works include Unpredictable: Conversations wit
 h Improvisers\, a series of 12 videos about improvisers in the UK. It also
  includes extensive participation with collectives such as Unpredictable S
 eries\, Strange Umbrellas\, and a number of festivals including Sonic Wate
 rloo\, Art of Improvisers\, Alterations Festivals among others.\n\nhttp://

 ESFORD has been a central figure in the British and international spontane
 ous music scenes for over forty years\, freely improvising on the piano\, 
 electronics and other things with people like Derek Bailey\, Evan Parker\,
  Han Bennink\, John Zorn and Alterations (with David Toop\, Terry Day and 
 Peter Cusack).\n\nHe has written songs\, written for large and small ensem
 bles\, and scored short films\, feature films\, TV shows and commercials.\
 n\nSteve has worked with Christian Marclay on numerous Marclay mixed media
  pieces. He has also worked with The Slits\, Stewart Lee\, Ivor Cutler\, P
 rince Far-I\, Alan Hacker\, Tania Chen\, Ray Davies\, Mandhira De Saram\, 
 The Flying Lizards\, Zeena Parkins\, Satoko Fukuda\, The Portsmouth Sinfon
 ia\, Ilan Volkov\, Rachel Musson\, Vic Reeves\, Sarah Gail Brand\, Lore Li
 xenberg and others.\n\nBeresford has an extensive discography as performer
 \, arranger\, free-improviser\, composer and producer\, and was awarded a

 k/mberes.html\n\n\n\n\n\nBLANCA REGINA\nBlanca Regina is an artist\, tutor
  and curator based in London. She is currently involved in creating audiov
 isual performances\, sound works\, multimedia installations\, photography 
 and book arts. Blanca has lead audiovisual performance art and projection 
 mapping workshops and has curated events internationally. Expanded and Eph
 emera Audiovisual was her first solo exhibition\, presented in México in 
 2015. In it\, she explores the interplay of image\, sound and space\, digi
 tal and analogue media and connects elements of language\, identity and ar
 chive.\n\nBlanca has performed with artists David Toop\, Leafcutter John\,
  Steve Beresford\, Sharon Gal\, Mandhira de Saram\, Adriana Camacho and Ma
 tthias Kispert\, also creating a number of films with them. Her work has b
 een supported by Arts Council England\, Sound &amp\; Music\, BMC\, Amex CI
 D\, Photo-España and Garage Cube.\n\nHer recent projects include research
  with the Immersive Pipeline Project at Goldsmith University London and an
  artist’s residency at Solar\, Tenerife\, Canary Islands\, Spain.\n\nhtt

 ian from Los Angeles\, whose songs explore sexuality\, black politics and 
 religion\, through a lyrical mix of experimental funk and gospel folklore.
  A singer and pianist\, Art underpins deeply personal verses with dense me
 lodic textures. The Wire described Sex Madness\, Art's most recent release
 \, as ‘an amazing album\, all the more jaw-dropping for its deceptive si
 mplicity.’\nwww.artterry.co.uk\n\n\n\nSTEVEN BALL\nSteven Ball has worke
 d in film\, video\, sound\, and installation since the 1980s. His early pr
 actice combined super 8 film and video\, and more recently encompasses dig
 ital audio-visual media\, in exhibition\, online and live\, audio-visual a
 nd spoken-word performance. He also writes\, performs\, and releases music
 \, both as a solo artist and as a member of The Storm Bugs. In the last fe
 w years he has concentrated on writing and recording suites of songs\, whi
 ch have been described by Radio Free Midwich as “…the missing link bet
 ween reductionist improv and the intimate breathy song cycles of a Robert 
 Wyatt.” His latest album ‘Bastard Island’ (Linear Obsessional 2019) 
 is a collection of speculative fiction dispatches from spatio-temporally a
 mbiguous elsewheres and elsewhens. For Strange Umbrellas he will perform n
